Dentures are made when there are not enough natural teeth to make fixed structures (bridges). Dentures are generally divided into partial dentures (in the presence of natural teeth) and complete dentures (in the absence of natural teeth).

Full (total) dentures are made for patients who are missing all of their natural teeth. Traditional full dentures are placed after the gums have fully healed, which can take several months. Partial dentures are attached to natural teeth using metal hooks or joints and are used to fill in areas where teeth are missing. Partial dentures are considered a removable alternative to bridges.
